Country bathed by the Atlantic Ocean

Portugal’s location on the Atlantic coast is unique. The small country has nearly 1,800 kilometres of coastline! The smell of the Atlantic reaches Lisbon’s beachfront, its waves crash onto the beaches in the south and it provides ingredients for traditional and modern delicacies.

The Atlantic also surrounds the magical Portuguese islands, Madeira and Azores. Their lush, subtropic nature is wild and exotic by European standards.

In the north, you will find scenic hills, amazing natural parks and verdant hiking trails. Here are also located the country’s most northern wine region, Vinho Verde, known for its fresh white wines, and the Douro Rivel valley, the birthplace of port. A river cruise in the darkening evening, wine cellar visits and charming old town Porto, with its red roofs and maze-like streets, are truly worth exploring!

The joyous, pleasant and lively Lisbon is also worth visiting. It will delight you with its magnificent buildings from the Age of Discovery, distinctive districts, traditional cafés and fado houses.

You can admire houses covered head to toe in hand-painted, beautiful azulejo tiles. This traditional craft is still very much alive.

Whether you’re looking for Michelin-star fine dining or local delicacies, Portugal is full of excellent restaurants. The national dish, bacalhau (cod), is available everywhere. There must be cod recipes for every day of the year.

Inland!

Portugal’s inland is a dream destination for travellers seeking authenticity. Here you will find charming little towns, protected by fortress walls, that are difficult to reach using public transport. There are fewer tourists and more authentic everyday life.
