Switzerland

3 x nice to know

1.

The Swiss have a strong sense of national pride, and sometimes they go to great lengths to express it. What do you think of the Swiss National Day tradition of selling hard-boiled eggs painted red and decorated with a white cross?

2.

On Sundays, you are allowed – or obliged – to rest and relax. You should not mow the lawn, hang the laundry, hammer nails into walls or show other signs of diligence.

3.

Charging your phone may cause problems unless you have an adapter with you. Switzerland uses three-pronged plugs whereas usually in the rest of Europe, they are two-pronged.

Train travel and hiking paradise

Switzerland has been blessed with an abundance of good and beautiful things: high mountains and clean lakes, valleys and waterfalls cascading into them, medieval towns and idyllic Alpine villages, magnificent hiking trails and luxurious ski resorts.

You will find top-notch restaurants, fascinating galleries, lively nightlife – and the world’s most prestigious watches. Here, everything works like clockwork, too!

The Alps cover two thirds of Switzerland, and they have tens of mountain peaks over 4,000 metres high – a heaven on Earth for hikers and climbers!

Switzerland is a dream destination also for those who enjoy beauty. The easiest way to see the spectacular and surprisingly varying landscapes is by train. In Switzerland, travelling by train is close to ecstatic. Everything is clean and tidy and always on schedule, and the views from the window take travellers’ breath away.

Although the restaurant culture has become increasingly international in Switzerland, too, the traditional fondue, raclette and cheese in general are still valued. With your meals, you can enjoy local wines that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. The Swiss drink nearly all the wine they make themselves.

Local chocolate is delicious as well. There are numerous chocolate shops and factories that organise tours. The selection is wide, and the number of chocolate eggs and bunnies, especially at Easter, is absolutely incredible.

Rail journeys!

The Glacier Express rail journey is regarded as the most magnificent in Switzerland: the eight-hour trip takes you from Zermatt to St. Moritz. However, you can enjoy spectacular scenery also on shorter local train journeys.
